Mapperton

Often referenced as ‘The Nation’s Finest Manor House’, Mapperton House and Gardens is the family home of the Earl and Countess of Sandwich.
Tucked into a dramatic Dorset combe, Mapperton’s award-winning Italianate Gardens combine formal structure softened by nature. Famous for their romantic and tranquil setting, the Grade II* gardens radiate from the Fountain Court, framed by clipped topiary, grottoes, stone statues, and octagonal pools.
The gilded orangery, sheltering roses, begonias, and exotics beneath a glass roof, leads out to the terraces and sweeping valley views. The lower terrace reveals a 17th-century summerhouse, spring-fed ponds, and the beginnings of the wild garden. Beyond is the Arboretum and woodland walks unfold with magnolias, dawn redwoods, tulip trees, and dogwoods.
Seasonal and varied planting displays bring constant renewal - from spring bulbs to summer roses and autumn bronzes. Winner of Historic Houses’ Diversification Award 2025, Mapperton continues to evolve and charm visitors while maintaining its deeply rooted legacy.
